Motivation Monday: The Junk Drawer
Each Monday, we're rolling out a new challenge to change the way you think, act, do, or feel. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to be motivated to try something different for a week. And if you love it, keep it going!
This week we're asking you to tackle the junk drawer - whether literal or proverbial. In other words, this week is all about decluttering or taking care of those painful little household tasks you've been studiously avoiding.
The steps are pretty simple. First, if you have an actual junk drawer somewhere in your house, open it up. Spend 30 minutes maximum going through it and clearing out things you don't need or putting things where they belong. Also, if possible, identify which things go together and whether you can acquire some drawer organizers to help keep them neat and tidy.
If you didn't manage to clean out your drawer on day one, hit it again on day two, again setting a time limit so you don't feel overwhelmed. Keep going for the rest of the week until that drawer is mastered.
Now, if you manage to clean out your junk before the end of the week (and let's be honest, you should be able to), it's time to make a quick list of other clutter in your house that needs minding. This could include:
- Dead batteries
- Outdated electronics
- Clothes that no longer fit
- Household items you aren't using
- Books you've read and don't plan to read again
- Old toys your kids don't play with
- Other cluttered areas of your home (like a closet or drawer)
Pick one or more of these items to tackle this week and follow the same method as above. If you still have more you want to tackle after this week, consider giving yourself one task per week. For example, if you want to get rid of some old tech, one Monday plan to do some research to see which organizations are taking which electronics. Then do a sweep of the house on Tuesday or Wednesday. By Friday, commit to heading out with your junk haul.
You'll be amazed at how accomplished you feel checking off each of these tasks - and how much tidier your home is!
