Motivation Monday: Clean Out Your Cupboards

Each Monday, we're rolling out a new challenge to change the way you think, act, do, or feel. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to be motivated to try something different for a week. And if you love it, keep it going!

Most of us typically associate spring cleaning with heavy duty tasks like mopping the floors or pressure washing the house. But one oft-overlooked area of your home that could use a little sprucing up is your kitchen. Namely, with so many cool options on grocery store shelves these days, it's easy to load up your cupboards and your fridge with uber unique ingredients that might not see the light of day after one use.

This week's Motivation Monday challenge is to take a good look in your cupboards and fridge and clean 'em out - in one respect or another.

The first step to clear out kitchen clutter is to get rid of anything that's expired. Your fridge is a great place to start - salad dressings and condiments are often kept for well past their expiry dates, for example! But don't forget about things like baking ingredients or other shelf-stable items. While your canned foods are probably still okay, what about that jar of bizarre jelly you got at the farmer's market? Or that box of uniquely coloured pasta?

As you clean out your cupboards, you'll probably unearth an ingredient or two that hasn't been used in forever. For example, that curry paste you bought and used twice before forgetting about it. Your next task then, is to pick out a few of those rarely used and still plentiful ingredients and try to get creative in the kitchen. With the web at your fingertips, you can easily type in an ingredient or two and bring up thousands of yummy recipes.

While you're tidying things up, pay attention to a few other spots, such as:

  • Giving your produce drawers a serious scrub
  • Changing your water filter on your pitcher
  • Organizing your reusable containers and getting rid of any mismatched pieces
  • Going through your cookbooks and giving away any that you never look at
  • Cleaning your oven
  • Don't forget your freezer when going through the expiry date task above!

Not only will this task help you use up those ingredients, it'll also save you money - all you have to buy this week are a few fresh veggies (hopefully!) And what better to spend that spare change on than a new dress for your next dinner fete?
